Since 1974, the Golf has evolved through seven generations to become Volkswagen’s most successful model. Initially conceived as a replacement of the Beetle, the Golf Mk I was a front engined small family car that offered more space while being relatively compact, a good sturdy and well-conceived design, and reliable, efficient mechanics for the discerning public throughout the world; in the USA, it was named the ‘Rabbit’ and in Mexico, the ‘Caribe’.
This now fairly rare Golf Mk I GL is very original and has had just three owners in total; the previous custodian owned the motor car for twenty years and during that time, it spent some time in dry storage. We understand that LOR 980Y has been rustproofed from new, which has clearly paid off any serious corrosion has been kept at bay. The Golf sits on original road wheels with Radial Ply tyres; the cloth interior and carpets have stood the test of time well and the paintwork is tidy. Mechanically, we are told that the motor car is in good order; in 2012, a new petrol tank and pump were fitted and recently, a new battery was installed.
This modern classic is supplied with a history file that includes invoices, several MOT test certificates and the V5C registration certificate.
