The idea for the Volkswagen Caravanette is generally credited to Ben Pon, a Dutch importer of Volkswagens. In 1946, Pon travelled to Germany with the view of purchasing Beetles (the Type 1) to import to Holland. After noticing an improvised Beetle van, he realised that using the Type 1 floorpan, an improved version was possible. Arriving in 1950, the Type 2 was offered in a vast range of models. The original retained the Beetle’s 1200cc air cooled engine, but as the vehicle developed, engine sizes grew and handling, braking and comfort all improved.
This 1979 camper, a Late Bay model, has resided in Somerset since 1987. Sadly its owner has passed away so little knowledge of the camper exists, although we know that its last MOT was in 2017. It clearly has been much loved in the past and has benefitted from a respray at some point, in the correct colour. The VW comes with an awning and a toilet tent and we’re told that the original fridge is present but not fitted as its owner installed a cupboard in its place. The original front seats are clean and tidy (apart from a small hole in the driver’s seat) and the rear seat and bed cushion have presumably been reupholstered in the past. The interior is well appointed with good cupboards. The bodywork and paint remain in exemplary condition, with nice straight sides and a first class paint finish and no evidence of rust. Mechanically, we understand that there are no known faults, the VW certainly starts easily and performs as it should, it’s all ready and waiting for a winter weekend getaway!
The VW is supplied with a 2016 MOT test certificate and the V5C registration certificate.
