The TR3 first went into production in October 1955. Although the motor car was designed as an open two seat tourer, the optional extra of a rear seat and bolt-on steel had top made the TR3 even more versatile to cope with the unpredictable British climate. From 1956, front brakes were changed from drums to discs, the first British production sports car to do so. In 1957 the TR3 was updated with some cosmetic changes, including a full width radiator grille, exterior door handles, lockable boot and a complete tool kit. With these somewhat minor changes the TR3 unofficially became the TR3A and finally ceased production in 1962 after becoming the third highest selling TR after the 6 and the 7.
This original UK right hand drive example (with correct engine and chassis numbers) was first registered as 256 AJJ to a Derek Gallant of RNAS Lossiemouth, who owned the motor car until 1976. A major restoration was carried out in 1988-89, and the Triumph was re-registered as 509 UXM; we understand that work included an engine rebuild to fast road specification, with a lightened flywheel, a stage two cylinder head, a high lift camshaft and a Kenlowe fan. The gearbox was reconditioned and the suspension overhauled, with a Koni rear-strut conversion fitted. The speedometer unit was replaced at that time, and now reads some 18000 miles.
In 2005, another bare metal respray was completed, and additional work included a retrim with a new interior, carpets, hood, tonneau cover and side screens. New wire wheels were also fitted, together with: an unleaded cylinder head, a balanced and modified crankshaft (with an uprated rear seal), a high torque starter motor and a stainless steel exhaust system. The radiator was recored at that time.
During 2006, the rear axle and carburettors were rebuilt, and halogen headlamps and wind deflectors fitted. An electronic ignition and seat belts have been recently fitted and in 2014, the TR was set up on the rolling road at Sigma Engineering in Dorset.
509 UXM is supplied with a large history file containing numerous invoices, data, a record of concours achievements, MOT test certificates, a VE60 registration book and the V5C registration certificate.
