Some may be surprised to read that the Celica first appeared way back in 1970 as a sporting saloon to rival the perennially popular Ford Mustang. The styling of the Japanese model was fairly similar to that of its American rival in the Seventies, but the Eighties saw something more akin to the widely admired ‘Wedge’ shape that Lotus and the like had perfected so well. The final year of that decade produced a sports car with a more modern design that paved the way for the Celicas of the Nineties and Noughties: a more rounded, aerodynamic and fashionable body with improved sports car mechanics and performance. Production ceased in 2006, but the Celica has a loyal following and the canny collector may well consider it to be a classic of tomorrow.
Described as being in overall good, usable condition, this Celica GT Coupe has clearly been looked after, but it would be fair to say that it could be improved upon cosmetically. The vast history file supplied with the motor car however, suggests that the mechanical aspect has been maintained well. In 2014 for example, an invoice for work amounting to £547.98 states that a new timing belt and water pump were fitted, and that the Celica’s underside was treated with Waxoyl rust treatment. Recently, we are informed that a lubrication service has been carried out and a new radiator fitted.
The current custodian has decided that a ‘more pedestrian set of wheels’ might well be more appropriate for his advancing years and so is reluctantly offering his cherished modern classic for sale with the aforementioned history file that also includes numerous other invoices and MOT test certificates, the handbooks, old road tax discs and the V5C registration certificate.
