The P6 Series came from the Rover Company in Solihull and subsequently by British Leyland. There were three variations, known as 2000, 2200, and 3500, the latter having the Buick based V8 engine. At the time of its introduction there was a gap in the British market between the 1.5 litre cars and the larger offerings from Ford, Singer, Wolseley and Vauxhall, although abroad one could buy a Citroen DS, a Lancia Flavia or a Chevrolet Corvair. The young executives of the period appreciated the modern lines and well-appointed interior of the P6 and the model sold well. Advanced engineering helped in the form of a De Dion tube suspension at the rear and disc brakes all round. The bodywork was carefully constructed for maximum safety for occupants and indeed an Industry Safety Award was the result.
This smart 3500 V8 example has been for the last eight years in the ownership of an avid and knowledgeable classic car collector who has cherished his P6 and maintained it well. From the file, we see that the speedometer drive was replaced in 2015 and in 2019, a new distributer cap was fitted together with a new rotar arm. The heater hoses, petrol pipe and reducer pipes have all been renewed. In 2021, a new ignition barrel and new oil filter were also installed fitted. Now, bodywork and panel fit are described as being good, as is the underside. The paintwork, although not concours, is in good order. The interior is lovely, with the upholstery in complementary cream and fawn carpets. Instrumentation is working apart from the rev counter which apparently has an intermittent fault. Mechanically, the Rover is described as good with no known issues.
This history file contains a 3500 owner’s manual, MOT test certificates dating back to 1998, parts invoices dating from 1979, P6 owner’s club correspondence, other documentation and the V5C registration certificate.
