The original highly-influential design for the Mini by Sir Alec Issigonis was perfection in the eyes of most and stylistically, the motor car required little alteration from the first model in 1959 to the last in 2000. Over 1.5 million examples were sold in the UK and the innovative economy classic has certainly retained its popularity with sporting motorists of all ages.
This particular Mini was first supplied by Gilbert and Sons Ltd of Lincoln and has had just three custodians. The first owner was a member of the Royal Air Force based at Digby, Lincolnshire, and the second was a friend of the current owner. Credit must be paid to all three for maintaining the motor car to such a high and original standard; described by the vendor as very good, your correspondent can confirm that the Mini is indeed difficult to fault, despite there being some minor bubbles in the paint at the lower ‘A’ panels. The rear subframe (‘hydrolastic’ suspension) was replaced approximately twenty years ago and we are informed that it has been regularly rustproofed since.
The Mini is fitted with the period accessory wood effect dashboard, which could be easily removed if required. The tyres have recently been replaced with four new of the cross-ply variety.
BTL 311C is supplied with its original ‘Passport to Service’, two handbooks in the wax envelope, a factory workshop manual, BMC Drivers Club details, a BMC Country Road Map and Gazetteer (No. 26) and MOT test certificates from 1995. The mileage is understood to be correct.
