First introduced in 1936, the 4-4 was Morgan’s first sports car with four wheels. The 1122cc Coventry Climax four cylinder engine also provided inspiration for the new model’s name. Performance was usually brisk indeed, and the well-considered, now iconic design provided driver and passenger with rather more comfort and stability than the 4-4’s three-wheeled predecessor. As well as the original two-seater, Morgan introduced a four-seat model in 1937 and a drophead coupe in the following year. A little over 1700 models of the Series I were produced; however, the 4-4 has stood the test of time well and can still be purchased new from Morgan today – how many sports cars can claim a near-continuous production run from 1936?
This impressive and exciting Series I was restored by its previous owner in 1980, which we understand involved a full body and paint restoration, an engine rebuild (which included the fitting of new white metal bearings) and the overhaul of the transmission, rear axle and braking system. When the Morgan returned to the road, the speedometer mileage was reset to zero, as confirmed by the MOT test certificate of 1980. We are told that the upholstery has also been renewed to the original pattern and an electric cooling fan installed for modern traffic conditions. The steel wheels with chrome hub caps are original to the motor car.
The current custodian purchased the 4-4 some six years ago, and has enjoyed it on club rallies and runs. A steering and suspension overhaul was carried out in 2013 and the award-winning example remains in good condition throughout.
The history file includes the V5C registration certificate, MOT test certificates dating back to 1980, invoices, a workshop manual and a hand-written letter from the Morgan Motor Company, dated 1979, confirming the originality of 836 YYC. Hand-written correspondence from the vehicle licencing office is also supplied, confirming the registration number and age of the vehicle.
