The MG Car Company sought to continue its pre-War success by introducing the TC in 1946, but by the turn of the decade it became obvious that change was needed. The TD was introduced in 1949, utilising the same chassis and 1250cc XPAG engine as its predecessor, but with new rack and pinion steering and independent front suspension. The resulting vehicle was faster and roomier than the TC and became very popular, with many exported to America. These models are still highly regarded today, offering good performance and an excellent supply of spare parts and technical assistance on hand through the Owner’s Club.
This fine example was originally exported to the USA but was repatriated to the UK in the late eighties. At some point it underwent a complete restoration before the late husband of the current custodian purchased the TD in 2009 and it has been clearly cherished ever since.
Cosmetically, the MG is in good condition, with excellent weather equipment. The paintwork is still first class, apart from some touching in on the L/H/R wing, which could be easily rectified. The interior is trimmed with a contrasting original colour of green and is very smart. Mechanically, there are no known faults and the TD is ready to be enjoyed. A Brooklands steering wheel is fitted, the original is supplied.
In March of this year, a programme of maintenance was carried out, which included the fitting of a new battery, fuel pump, condenser, dynamo, rev counter cable and push rod etc, together with other general servicing and maintenance. The TD was also successfully put through an MOT test.
The history file contains the V5C registration certificate, sundry invoices, MOT test certificates from 1998, correspondence, ‘MG Autobook One’ (first edition 1968), a modern MG workshop manual, parts and carburettor catalogues, an MG Series ‘TD’ operation manual, an MG Owners’ Club magazine from 2006, and ‘Maintaining the Breed – The Saga of MG Racing Cars’ published in 1950.
