Produced by MG’s Abingdon Works from 1936, the TA Midget comprised an open two seater with a 1292 cc four cylinder engine, previously used in the Wolseley Ten, and a four speed manual part synchromesh gearbox. There were a variety of bodies but the standard offering was in steel mounted to the separate chassis on an ash frame. There was a bench-style seat with storage to the rear. Competition success included a win in the 1939 Australian Grand Prix.
From the file, we see that this particular TA resided in South Somerset from at least the late sixties before moving to the care of a gentleman in North Dorset in the early 1970s, where it has remained, with ownership passing to his daughter in 2012. The sports car was carefully used and maintained well; work carried out in the 1990s included attention to the braking system, a dynamo rebuild and the fitting of new brake calipers, clutch assembly and water pump. The current custodian decided that the MG was too much to manage and so for at least the last eleven years it has remained in dry, barn storage. Now, it requires a general recommissioning and sort out. The engine turns. The body is sound and solid (it would probably polish up), the upholstery and trim are serviceable and the weather equipment is present. New tyres and tubes are required.
The history file contains invoices, photographs of the car in good order, parts lists, a lubrication chart, tax discs, a number of MOT test certificates dating back to the 1970s, two RF60 continuation books from 1969, a V5 document and the V5C registration certificate. A lovely project for a T-Type enthusiast.
A selection of spare parts are included in the sale, contained within a wooden box.
