Probably the most widely recognisable of all British classics, the MG B’s appeal stretches far and wide, from first time classic car enthusiasts with limited budgets to more experienced collectors and competitors. At the time of its launch back in 1962, it was something of a phenomenon for the motoring classes of Britain; not only stylishly designed both as a GT Coupe and ‘Roadster’, the MG B was also practical and affordable, and became one of the most desirable cars on Britain’s roads. Production of the ‘B’ ended with the closure of the Abingdon plant in 1980 after a total of 513,000 motor cars had been manufactured.
This early ‘pull handle’ Roadster was purchased by the current custodian in 1982. Prior to this date, a replacement engine had been fitted to the car, which is understood to be the correct three bearing unit. A thorough restoration commenced in the early Eighties, which included an inspection of the chassis and refurbishment where required, and the fitting of several replacement body panels. A complete respray was carried out in 2011. We are assured that the underside, floor and boot panels remain in excellent condition; the body is described as good and the paintwork also excellent. The chrome work is good. The upholstery, interior trim and carpets were replaced at the time of restoration in 1982 and are described now as excellent; the dashboard, instruments and steering wheel are all original to the motor car, and sensibly, Britax period seat belts and auxiliary lamps are fitted. The weather equipment is original and in good, usable condition, and the hood is the correct Packaway type. Mechanically, we are informed that in all departments, the ‘B’ is in good order; the MG sits on correct silver painted wire wheels fitted with excellent tyres, and is equipped with a stainless steel exhaust system.
The history file includes invoices, old MOT test certificates, the V5C registration certificate and a BL Heritage Certificate confirming the supplying dealer as University Motors of London.
