Inspired by the American Willys Jeep, the Rover Company introduced the Land Rover Series 1 80 inch in 1948. It was adaptable, durable and soon became a popular utility vehicle both in the UK and overseas. The Series III arrived in 1971 and shared much of its initial make-up with its predecessor, the Series IIA; the inherited 2 ¼ litre engine offered the driver improved performance and it was the first model to offer an all-synchromesh gearbox. Production of the Series III ran until 1985 and during those fourteen years, the model developed vastly to become a more sophisticated vehicle, heralding the way for the modern Defender. Land Rovers firmly remain not just a ‘cult’ classic – they sought after by many who find the multi-purpose vehicles equally suited to everyday use as they are to special occasions and historic rallies.
Supplied new by Country Garage (Barnstaple) Ltd, this example appears to have spent its entire life in that same town. With only three previous owners, the Land Rover has been in the current custodianship for twenty-two years and has clearly been well maintained and cherished; the bodywork and interior are in very nice condition and the chassis has been regularly Waxoyled, which has certainly paid-off. Interestingly, the vehicle is fitted with a telephone, which we are assured is in working order. The Safari edition is equipped with freewheel hubs and overdrive transmission.
VTA 801X is supplied with the original handbook, the V5 document, the V5C registration certificate, images, and a quantity of invoices and MOT test certificates.
