Offered initially as a stop gap utility vehicle in 1948 to counter the American Jeep, this Maurice Wilks design surprised its creators and was soon to become ‘the best 4X4 by far’. In taking the design forward, it had to be born in mind that their product was being used for serious purposes, like expeditions and for military work. It had to be tough and dependable and repairable in difficult conditions; for instance, the engine could be rebuilt without having to remove the block or indeed the gearbox. The Series II appeared in 1958 and the David Balche laid down the basic Land Rover shape that would last for many years. Made in 88” short wheelbase form or 107” long wheelbase mode, both were subsequently fitted with the 2 .25 litre OHV engine from 1958 onwards. A diesel option was also available. A 4 speed manual gearbox remained standard with high and low range and a separate lever controlled the four wheel drive system. The Series IIA appeared in 1961 and was thought to be the most durable and easiest to repair.
This Series IIA has had just five former keepers. The previous owner carried out a restoration of the vehicle from 2019 until 2020; most of the work we presume he did himself, and he meticulously retained all invoices appertaining to the parts procured. Many components were replaced, including the sill and floor panels, the right hand door top, rubbers and seals, nuts and bolts, gaskets, the ignition coil, the steering relay, the fuel cap and seal, the brake drums and the front seat set, together with the hood by Exmoor Trim. The clutch has been renewed and the engine tuned. In the summer of 2020, the bulkhead was extensively repaired, and together with a front end rebuild, the replacement of the front quarter of the chassis and a re-wiring of the vehicle, this work and more was professionally carried out at a cost of almost £6000.
The current custodian purchased the Land Rover in the same year and a change of circumstances forces the sale today. We are told that a new dynamo has recently been fitted and the mechanical aspect of the vehicle is believed to be good. The bodywork is solid and the Series IIA is in good overall condition and is certainly ready for adventures with its new custodian.
The history file contains the V5C registration certificate and a large number of invoices from the previous ownership. Also supplied is a good quality cover with a locking cable and padlock, and a Haynes manual.
