1962 Ford Consul 375 Saloon

Very much of the ‘Rock ‘n Roll’ era, the Mk II Ford Consul was produced from 1956 to 1961. Using the same body shell as the Zephyr but with a four cylinder engine of 1703cc, many enjoyed the American- style lines and spacious interior with front and rear bench seating. The column change gearbox was a feature and this also added to the spacious feel to the accommodation. This 375 (with disc brakes on the front) comes from the end of the production of the Mark II Consul, which would be replaced by the V4 Zephyr, which maybe lacks the charisma and charm with which Ford imbued the former.

This delightful Consul comes to the market for the first time since 1963. Its first owner was a Mr Edwin Blake of Woking, who purchased the motor car from Newnhams Ltd of Hammersmith for the princely sum of £799.15 in 1962. A year later, Rowland Sansom, the late Cedric Sansom’s father, purchased the Ford for £570, and the motor car eventually passed to Cedric, its third custodian. It remains in very original order with a remarkably low mileage for its age; indeed, we may be bold enough to suggest that it would be very difficult to find another Consul in this condition. We understand the bodywork is straight with no evidence of serious rust, the interior is very nice and original without any of the usual dashboard top splits, but it is worth noting that the although the rear windscreen does not leak, it would probably benefit from being sealed . Mechanically, we believe the motor car to be in good order, but after a period of storage, it will require both a new battery and a recommissioning service before returning to the road.

The extensive history offered with the Ford includes the original stamped sales invoice from Newnhams Ltd, a hand-written sale agreement receipt from the first owner for the second, invoices from the nineties and noughties plus undated receipts for work carried out at Links Garage of Parkstone, almost continuous MOT test certificates dating from 1992 to 2012, approximately twenty road tax discs, correspondence, a Pitman’s  handbook, a notebook of money spent on the motor car during the Eighties, an Olyslager manual,  the RF60 registration book, the V5 document, the V5C registration certificate and its replacement. Also included are a number of Ford publications supplied with the Consul when new: a well-worn handbook, Ford Motor Company of Dagenham radio and battery warranties, radio instructions, a disc brakes leaflet, a Schedule of Repair Charges, an accessories leaflet, seat cover fitting instructions for 1958 – 62, and a service voucher leaflet (minus the vouchers!).

ADDENDUM

Please note that the brake master cylinder has been removed, presumably for repair. There are spare parts in the boot for the master cylinder, together with others including four new-old stock hub caps.
