The idea for the Volkswagen Caravanette is generally credited to Ben Pon, a Dutch importer of Volkswagens. In 1946, Pon travelled to Germany with the view of purchasing Beetles (the Type 1) to import to Holland. After noticing an improvised Beetle van, he realised that using the Type 1 floorpan, an improved version was possible. Arriving in 1950, the Type 2 was offered in a vast range of models. The original retained the Beetle’s 1200cc air cooled engine, but as the vehicle developed, engine sizes grew and handling and comfort improved. The fourth generation, or T4, first appeared in 1990 and was a notable departure for VW, as it boasted a front mounted water cooled engine. Although much more modern in appearance, the T4 retained the quintessential Camper Van design and vibe, and keeps a strong and loyal following today.
This 1992 example has clearly been well cared for and maintained. It is fully equipped for those weekends away or trips across the water. Accommodation is for four people; the rear seat converts into a ¾ width double bed (which slides out on rails with the choice of three positions) and the high top roof is equipped with a fold-out bed. The kitchen is equipped with cupboards, a two burner hob with grill and an Electrolux refrigerator. The appliances in the living area are conveniently operated by gas or 12 volt / 240 volt electrics. The gas locker at the rear of the vehicle holds two cylinders, and a fresh water tank and electric pump system are fitted. The Camper has adequate lighting for late evenings, and the stainless steel outside ladder gives access to the roof rack.
We are assured that the mechanics are in good order with no known faults. A power steering rack and column are fitted. The underside of the vehicle has recently been rustproofed with Waxoyl and a lubrication service carried out.
The history file contains numerous invoices, old road tax discs, MOT test certificates, the V5 document and the V5C registration certificate.
