The Hillman Minx was introduced in 1932 to take the company into the mass production class, providing a robust and attractive vehicle for £159, and powered by a rugged 1185cc side valve engine. After Hillman’s war service, the Minx reappeared as the Mk I in 1945 and inherited the same engine as the pre-war models as well as the same basic design, but sported a protruding boot and was offered in saloon, Drophead Coupe or estate form. After many reincarnations, production of the Minx finally ceased in 1970.
There are few survivors of those early Hillman Minx Drophead Coupes and as a result, they are seldom seen on British roads. This 1947 example is in very original condition, with a serviceable three position hood and original burgundy leather upholstery. Although the Minx may benefit from a paintwork makeover, the motor car is described by the vendor as good in most departments, with no known mechanical faults and should provide many happy miles of rare retro motoring.
Supplied with KUM 939 is a schedule of work carried out a year ago, which included the welding of the rear cross member, road spring hangers and rear floor, together with an overhaul of the cylinder head and steering and braking systems. The engine sump was also removed and cleaned.
The history file also includes the V5C registration certificate and correspondence from the first owner’s son, who recalls the Hillman’s early history in the Yorkshire Dales and on holiday in the French Alps.
