Vespa production began in 1946 by the Piaggio Company of Genoa. The first Vespa was powered by a 98cc unit; only one hundred of the original models were manufactured before a more refined version went into mass production. The small scooter, initially intended to meet the demand for economical transport in cash-strapped Italy, well-exceeded all expectations and in 1950, 60000 models were produced.
The restoration of this 1978 example has been carried out over a four year period by its enthusiast owner. We are informed that the work has comprised of a complete dismantle, respray and rebuild, with many new parts installed. The engine has been rebored and a replacement piston fitted; the Vespa has also been rewired and equipped with a new coil and battery. The control cables, brake and clutch levers, the petrol tap, steering head and underbody panel have all been replaced, as have the speedometer and horn. The motor scooter sits on wheels with new bearings, tyres and tubes, and future custodians will feel the benefit of a new dual seat!
This ideal weekend fun machine or retro commuter mode of transportation is supplied with its V5C registration certificate.
