This British family owned motor car company was founded by Henry Frederick Stanley Morgan in 1910. First arriving in 1936, the two-seat 4-4 was Morgan’s first model equipped with four, rather than three, wheels. The 4-4 designation referred to those special wheels and to the ‘four’ cylinder, 1122cc Coventry Climax engine that powered the sports car. By 1939, the engine had been upgraded to a Standard Special 1267cc unit and four-seat and drophead coupe body styles were already in production. The Series II 4/4 in 1955 saw the arrival of the Ford 100E engine and thus the models were gently upgraded up until 1968 when the 4/4 1600 appeared. Again with two and four seat body options, the new generation of models were powered by a choice of three 1599cc Ford Kent engines, which were eventually succeeded by the Ford CVH 1597cc unit in 1982. The fact that the 4/4 is still in production today is surely a testament to its enduring appeal with many British sports car enthusiasts.
With just one previous owner, this head-turning yellow and black four seater sports car, affectionately known as Bea, is a good, usable family ‘Morgan’. The motor car has proved to be reliable, and has been maintained well during the current custodianship of over twenty years. Cosmetically, some improvements could be made, but mechanically, we are informed that there are no known faults.
A large comprehensive history file supplied with the Morgan contains the V5C registration certificate, the V5 document, numerous invoices and MOT test certificates, correspondence, sales brochures, photographs, an owner’s handbook and the original sales invoice.
