1936 Ford Model Y Two Door Saloon

The Ford Model Y was the motor car to really get the recently-built Dagenham plant rolling when it went into production in 1932.

By 1935 it had been revised and gone down in price – Ford cleverly brought a version of the Y, more popularly known as the Ford Eight, into showrooms for £100, the only motor car ever to achieve this low price in UK motoring history.

This two door Model Y dates from 1936, the penultimate year of production, and still looks very original with its green and black exterior paint (only the wings have ever been repainted) and green Rexine interior with that leathery, worn look seen on many 84 year olds!

With its period patina, this motor car is a wonderful example of preservation rather than restoration and it probably deserves to stay this way. While its rod-operated brakes reflect the age, the Model Y comes with five new period-style tyres so should grip the road well as it heads out this summer, where it will be welcome at any show and is sure to garner attention.

By the 1950s, it was a mainstay family car as dads gave up the motorcycle combination to gain more comfort, accepting that occasionally swinging a starting handle was far better than a temperamental kickstart every day. Luckily, this car also has a new battery so starting should not be an issue.

The 993 c.c. sidevalve engine helps the car bowl along at modest speeds while the three speed gearstick sprouting from the transmission tunnel will be familiar to many who had motor cars built up until the 1960s as their first purchase.
