The 124 Sport Spider was launched at the Turin Motor Show in 1966; as a 2+2 convertible styled by Italian design house Pininfarina, it was powered by a twin overhead camshaft four cylinder unit, with the capacity increasing from 1438cc to 1995cc during the sixteen years of the model range’s production. The Sport Spider was only available in left hand drive configuration. The beautifully stylish bodied sports car was a big hit with the motoring press immediately, and created great interest throughout the motoring world.
This early Sport Spider, with a five speed gearbox, and finished in classic red with black Ambla interior, has during a previous ownership been fitted with a later 1756cc engine, giving it a very sprightly performance and improving the pleasurable driving experience. The current owner, having purchased the car in France, has enjoyed this sports car for the last nine years; he and his wife have made numerous trips overseas, and indeed, only last year drove to the South of France with a group of like-minded enthusiasts, with the Fiat performing faultlessly.
A programme of regular maintenance has been carried out; all receipts are in the file, along with maintenance manuals and road test reports written in both English and French. A conversion to unleaded fuel was carried out in 2008, along with the fitting of a new cambelt and camshaft pulleys. The vendor tells us that LKE 71E is not a US import model, that it is a pleasure to drive with no known faults, and all instruments are in correct working order. Prospective purchasers are advised to inspect the 'clean underside'.
The V5C registration certificate, together with past MOT test certificates, manuals, and images of the underside are also contained within the aforementioned file. Several spare parts, including tappet shims, an alternator, headlamps, a new petrol pump and service items, are included in the sale. The road tax classification for this motor car is 'historic'.
The motor car will be driven by its current custodian to the auction sale from Kent.
