From their first production of three wheelers in 1898, Ariel progressed to motorcycles in 1902. By World War I, the Ariel range had increased to 498cc side valve singles and inlet over exhaust V-twins. Jack Sangster purchased the company in 1902, and in 1927 he was joined by engineer Edward Turner and designer Val Page, whose development of mechanics and design made Ariel hugely successful. During World War II, many 347cc OHV Ariels were used by the Army; post-war, production was concentrated on 347 and 497cc OHV Red Hunter singles. By the late 1940s Jack Sangster (who was also involved with BSA) transferred Ariel into the BSA marque.
This LH Colt 200cc motorcycle was restored in 1992 by a previous owner. It appears to remain in good, tidy condition and at present forms part of a private collection. Perfect for Vintage Motor Cycle Club runs and events, the Colt is supplied with Ariel Owner’s Motorcycle Club correspondence, copies of the workshop and spare parts manuals, and the V5C registration certificate.
