1969 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow I

In 1965, Rolls-Royce introduced an entirely new design with unitary construction, self-levelling independent suspension and servo assisted brakes with three separate circuits. Power was provided by a V8 engine of 6230cc, driving through a GM three speed automatic gearbox. Progress was swift for such a large car and the Silver Shadow’s smoothness was exceptional.

This Silver Shadow I was supplied when first registered by Rolls-Royce distributor S. P. Broughton and Co Ltd of Cheltenham, to a Mr S. G. Howard Esq of Weston-Super-Mare. The original invoice, dated 8 September 1969, details the motor car as finished in Caribbean Blue, upholstered in grey, and with extras including air conditioning, Sundym glass and lambs’ wool rugs to the front and rear. The total cost of the Shadow was £8212, which included purchase tax, delivery and the number plates!

The current (and sixth) custodian purchased the motor car in 2014 and has used it for special occasions, classic car runs and events. We are informed that the odometer reading of 51265 miles is understood to be correct and the general condition of the motor car would suggest so; the paintwork may benefit from some improvement, but the bodywork seems sound and solid without signs of corrosion or damage and the underside is clean and tidy. The brightwork is generally good (only the right hand rear bumper requires some attention) and mechanically, there are no known faults. A new battery has recently been fitted. The Radial Ply tyres have had little use and the Shadow ‘sits’ well and is a pleasure to drive.

The history file includes the original handbook and wallet, a Rolls-Royce dealer book, the sales brochure, the aforementioned sales invoice, the delivery note and delivery documents card, radio instructions, maintenance sheets and data, invoices, a quantity of MOT test certificates, copies of past registration documents and the current V5C registration certificate.
