As with many early motor makers, Alexandre Darracq began his automotive career by producing bicycles. He sold his two-wheeled business in 1896 and invested his apparent fortune in the manufacture of bicycle components and horseless carriages. After an unsuccessful foray into electric vehicles and motor bicycles, in 1899 Darracq realised that his future lay with motor cars.
This 1907 Darracq 10/12hp Two Seater, with VCC dating certificate, was purchased by its current custodian, a retired school master, from the Brooks Beaulieu auction in 1999 as a part dismantled restoration project that was relatively complete, but ‘ripe for restoration’. A comprehensive nut-and-bolt restoration ensued; the engine was overhauled with professional specialist assistance and replacements included a new radiator, Zenith carburettor and tyres. The buttoned upholstery was also renewed, the mudguards and bonnet panels fabricated, the fuel systems were thoroughly checked and the wiring replaced. The Darracq was then repainted and finished with gold coachlines.
FX 323 was in running order until a change in circumstances some eighteen months ago, so will now require recommissioning before returning to the road. The all-important aforesaid VCC dating certificate is supplied, together with the V5C registration certificate, historic Darracq information, drawings, correspondence, technical data and images.
A rare opportunity.
